The Rackspace headquarters occupies a former mall located in San Antonio, Texas. Complete with an escalator connecting floors. The space is massive and can be hard to navigate - just like every 1980’s mall. The Real Estate Team had a lot of fun designing creative wayfinding solutions using themes to help people navigate the space.
Committed to upcycling and repurposing the team used mall signage as furniture and replanted trees cleared for parking into interior spaces. As the employee count grew the mall was further developed. Stores became conference rooms, food courts became sitting areas. Each new phase offered new creative opportunities.
In early 2016 Rackspace expanded and opened an ambitious phase. This toy-themed office space was complete with a toy store, dollhouse conference room, and a Radio Flyer made out of one of the mall's original directories. The dollhouse room required a photo shoot at a local dollhouse store. Our design team styled the dollhouse with rugs, and furniture - even a golden retriever. When you walk into the room - you have the feeling of being the doll as you stare up at the second story within the room. The outside of the conference room was covered in actual siding, with a porch and a real screen door.
